The Power of the Local Church Young Person

I have known for a while that there is amazing power in formally elevating our own young people into leadership at church. For around a decade at my family church and more recently across the conference we have seen the impact young people have when working for other young people.I have just started this year as pastor at Glen Huntly and Lilydale churches. One of my first key tasks has been to get a Youth Pastoral Worker functioning at both churches. I am amazed how quickly a local young person…See More

Small Group Ministry, We Tried That!

The statement, “Small group ministry, we’ve tried that it doesn’t work in Australian Adventist churches.” I have heard this statement many times. The inference is that ‘small group ministry’ is a program option that doesn’t work for Adventist churches. In this article I want to explore not only…See More

Assessment Can Make A Big Difference in Your Group!

How holistic is your small group? This is the key indicator of health and growth for a small group. The greater the holism a group has the more likely that it will grow and multiply. Without regular assessment you will achieve mediocre results. My experience has been that most churches pay little attention to accessing the health…See More

Hi Rob and thanks for trying to put me in the deep end. I don't mind swimming as long as there are no sharks in there. I read your post and you have a lot of good insights in there. I said I was a NCD Facilitator, maybe I should have said trainee NCD Facilitator.

In most surveys that I have read from the 1990's, the SDA church has always faired poorly in relationships. You have said that the results have improved. Maybe the questions have changed or the people are now used to surveys and want a better score for their church. Statistics are only a guide to help people or organisations improve if they are genuine about it.

The story of the rich young ruler highlights the dilemma for the human being. Eternal life or life itself is a focal point. Most people do not want to die. Therefore one of the focal points has been 'truth'. You know what people say when you are talking about 'love'. Many people don't want fluffy stuff, they want doctrine. That raises a flag!

The disciples said to Jesus 'How can anyone be saved?' Jesus said that 'With God all things are possible.' I suggest that people not worry about the doctrines till they have a loving relationship with God/Jesus first. That's where my focus is. Everything else is a natural by-product of that life giving relationship.

Rob,
have not been able to access the link on alcohol resources. The message is that the page has been suspended. Good link to material on suffering!

Hi Rob,
have been reflecting on usung failing as a learning tool. I had a student withdraw recently and it was a very positive experience in her growth. Wondering if you know of any resources in the area of "positive failing" that might give me words and concepts as I work on writing this up.

I Was A Stranger

Posted on August 1, 2013 at 6:39pm 0 Comments

This last year the Adventist church in Australia received some exciting news. We scored a 14% increase in Australians identifying them with the Seventh-day Adventist church. For many decades we had been declining and in the previous survey, just holding with a slight increase in 2006.

I was one of the first to hear this as I have had a long term involvement with the Christian Research Association. I remember calling up the Union President on a Friday night to share the good news. I said…

Creating Vision - Avoid Unnecessary Pain

A persistent question in my coaching work is, "What is the best way to create vision in my church?" Most leaders understand that without a vision a church, and particular leaders of the church, will fail to…
